Argentina was one of the first countries in Latin America to open its power sector to privatization, starting in 1991. AES was a player in that process, and we have been active in the country’s energy sector ever since.

AES entered Argentina in 1993 with the acquisition of the CTSN power plant in San Nicolas. Since then, AES has invested more than $1 billion in the country’s power sector. Today, through a combination of gas, coal, oil and hydro power plants and three electric utilities, AES plays a vital role in keeping the local and regional economy humming with flexible, reliable and affordable power. One of the largest private power generators in Argentina, AES contributes 12% of the country’s total power generation capacity. AES’s two distribution businesses serve approximately 474,000 customers in the province of Buenos Aires through a 29,700 kilometer network.

AES’s first plant in Latin America, CTSN today is a 675 MW plant that can burn coal, natural gas, fuel oil or a combination of these fuels. As the only plant in the Argentine electrical system with these capabilities, it plays a crucial role when certain fuels are in short supply, as happened during the natural gas shortage in 2004-2005. CTSN recently celebrated its 50th year of providing reliable power to the country.
