AES Cartagena, a combined cycle gas turbine generation (CCGT) plant and AES’s first facility in Spain, began full commercial operations in December 2006. The 1,200 MW CCGT facility is located on Spain’s southeastern coast and has the capacity to generate enough energy to power approximately 300,000 homes in the country. AES Cartagena´s power will support one of the fastest growing economies in Europe.
The $920 million project—the largest non-recourse project financing of its kind in the country to date—was recognized by Euromoney as “European IPP of the Year 2003.” AES Cartagena buys gas from and sells power to GDF International (GDFI), a subsidiary of Gaz de France, under a 21-year energy agreement. The plant normally operates on natural gas but can also be commissioned to operate on oil.
From the very start of the AES Cartagena project, the team has been engaged in various social activity projects. The team has worked with PROLAM, a local organization that helps mentally disabled people find work opportunities. AES Cartagena’s engineering team also has conducted an educational training program to help local unemployed people find jobs in the power sector.
