AES became the first private power investor in Hungary in 1996 when it acquired three power plants that, due to environmental standards, were scheduled to be decommissioned in 2004. Breathing new life into these assets, AES invested $110 million to upgrade and improve the environmental performance of each of the facilities, converting two facilities to enable them to burn biofuels and retrofitting the other.

Today, AES’s plants in Hungary include AES Borsod, a 96 MW biomass and coal-fired facility, and AES Tiszapalkonya, a 116 MW multi-fuel plant. Borsod is primarily fueled by burning woodchips and Tiszapalkonya primarily burns coal while retaining the ability to burn biomass. Other biofuel sources include sawdust, sunflower seed shells, and agricultural by-products and waste.

AES Tisza II, the third largest plant in the country, provides 7% of Hungary’s total electricity generation. AES completed our retrofit project on this plant in 2004, which greatly extended the life of the facility and extended the plant’s environmental license to 2016.
