AES currently operates and owns a minority stake in the OPGC power plant–also known as Orissa Power Generation Corporation Limited–the first and only generation privatization in the country. The 420 MW coal-fired power plant provides approximately 12% of the State of Orissa’s generation capacity.
Committed to helping shape India’s power sector and economy, AES actively participates in the US-India CEO Forum, which seeks to bring more investment in India’s infrastructure, liberalize the country’s financial sector and encourage more bilateral trade. This forum is comprised of 10 CEOs from India’s leading companies and 10 from the US, including AES President and CEO, Paul Hanrahan.
Our people are actively involved in the communities surrounding the plant, contributing to efforts to improve education and health care, and encouraging sports and cultural events. Recently, OPGC embarked on an ambitious project to provide piped drinking water to villages around the plant that face acute shortages of potable water.
OPGC has garnered several awards for safety in the power sector, as well as two for environmental excellence. The plant has also been officially recognized by state and industry groups for safety and managerial excellence.
