Today, AES operates four power plants in Kazakhstan which account for 8% of the country’s total installed generation capacity. AES also manages two distribution companies owned by the state.
AES entered the country in 1996, when electric bills were being paid, if at all, in goods. A decade later, the country is on the cusp of great growth, and our local businesses receive 100% payment - with no barter - for the power we sell to customers in Kazakhstan and Russia.
Our local business leaders have become important contributors to industry associations and government working groups on regional market formation. Preparing the next generation of leaders, in September 2005 AES launched a Leadership Learning Center in Ust-Kamenogorsk, in partnership with the Eurasia Foundation, the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research, and the Kazakhstan American Free University.
What’s more, AES is a good corporate citizen. In 2006, with the goal of improving basic healthcare and service delivery to our employees and to the communities where we have a significant presence, AES renovated hospital wards in Ust-Kamenogorsk and Ekibastuz as part of an AES Kazakhstan medical project. These medical institutions have been completely transformed into modern medical facilities, with advanced medical equipment and comfortable wards.
