AES owns three power plants in Mexico with the capacity to generate a total of 944 MW.
AES constructed, owns and operates the first independent power plant in Mexico: AES Mérida III, a 484 MW CCGT, natural gas and diesel-fired facility.
In February 2007, AES acquired two 230 MW power plants in Mexico, nearly doubling our megawatts in the country. Both of these facilities use circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology, which provides a cleaner way to burn petroleum coke compared to some other technologies. These assets fit well with AES given our expertise in operating CFB facilities.
In a show of AES’s commitment to the local community and environment, AES Mérida III has supported an environmental project in Celestun to help protect a reserve along the Yucatan coast. Each year, flamingos arrive to nest in Celestun, which is home to other protected regional species such as jaguar and deer. AES Mérida III has provided funds to help support the program, which is managed by a local NGO.
